Midwives Model of Care
The Midwives Model of Care™ is a fundamentally different approach to pregnancy and childbirth than contemporary obstetrics. Midwifery care is uniquely nurturing, hands-on care before, during, and after birth. Midwives are health care professionals specializing in pregnancy and childbirth who develop a trusting relationship with their clients, which results in confident, supported labor and birth. While there are different types of midwives practicing in various settings, all midwives are trained to provide comprehensive prenatal care and education, guide labor and birth, address complications, and care for newborns. The Midwives Model of Care™ is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events.
The Midwives Model of Care includes:
- monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother/birthing parent throughout the childbearing cycle
- providing the mother/birthing parent with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
- minimizing technological interventions and
- identifying and referring women/birthing people who require obstetrical attention.

Before I had my first baby I thought as a midwife I was supposed to provide you with a life altering experience. That my job was to make sure you felt empowered and incredible. What I realized after I had my first baby is that there is no way that was my job. My midwife with my first was wonderful. My labor was long and tiring but she was there encouraging me and reminding me why I was doing this but when my daughter was born and laying on my chest I somehow didn’t feel empowered. I just felt relief that it was over. It took me until my daughter was 6 months old to realize what a rock star I was and realize that I felt like I could do anything now. Such a difference from a birth I attended where as soon as she had pushed her baby out she couldn’t stop talking about what a rockstar she was and asking if those around her saw what she just did. I couldn’t stop smiling and agreeing with her that she was indeed an absolute rockstar.
As a midwife I don’t sell an experience. I can’t sell something that I can’t promise or control. I am not god. What I am is a midwife, a trained healthcare provider. I can’t promise that you will feel empowered as soon as you push your baby out. I can’t control how things may go during your prentals, labor or postpartum or if you will need a higher level of care.
What I provide is space.
Space for you to make all the choices involving testing and your care.
Space for you to learn what your body is capable of while I make sure you and your baby are safe.
Space to process feelings and allow feelings to develop.
Space to step into the responsibility and joy of being parents.
What I can promise is that you will be treated as the incredible, unique person you are with individualized care just for you and your pregnancy. I can promise that you will be an active part of your pregnancy. You are the expert of your body and I am just here to guide you and help you walk in that.
